Discrimination and violence against religious groups has been a problem in the United States since its inception. For example the lynching of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Morman church, and the Salem witch trials. Since September 11, 2001 violence against Muslim Americans has increased in intensity and scope. Often praised in the mainstream American culture. Muslim high school students are faced with constant bullying both implicit and explicit as well as direct violence because of their religion.

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a press release tonight that a group of teenage students attacked a 16-year-old girl of Iraqi heritage on a school bus in Ann Arbor Tuesday.
The family of the girl told CAIR that the assailants hit the girl repeatedly, pulled off her Islamic headscarf — or hijab — and dragged her to a home nearby, according to the press release. CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid told the Detroit Free Press that the assailants were five African American teenagers. According to the press release, the attackers shouted “Fuck Arabs, they are dirty” during the alleged assault.
“Because of the slurs reportedly used during this attack, we urge local, state and national law enforcement authorities to consider hate crime charges for any perpetrators arrested,” Walid said in the press release.
The girl required six stitches for the injuries to her face.
Ann Arbor Police Lieutenant Angela Abrams confirmed to the Daily that there was an assault and battery on Tuesday involving two attackers rather than the five alleged by CAIR.
She said the AAPD had no other details at the time, but would have more information Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
According to John Dewey, the concept of democracy not only applies to the federal government, but to schools as well. He believed that "schools should be laboratories of democracy where students developed communication and collaboration skills that enabled them to work with others as responsible citizens" (Pang, 21). This concept is called "Education for Democracy". It is through this concept that Dewey thought that religious, racial and social biases could be broken down. This also allows students of different backgrounds to understand and appreciate their differences.
